The Point: All Dolled Up

This gives new meaning to “plastic surgery.”

What would you say to someone who’s undergone more than fifty operations to be made to look more like Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken? Well, meet Rodrigo Alves.

This thirty-three-year-old suffers from body dysmorphic disorder, which has driven him to nose jobs, Botox, silicone chest implants and artificial six-pack abs. He’s been hospitalized for resulting infections, and is now having trouble breathing.

Doctors have rightly recommended counseling and psychiatric drugs if necessary. But why does the American Psychiatric Association recommend the exact opposite for another group—the transgendered?

Writing at The Federalist, Mark Narankevicius points out that while our society and medical community discourage “the human Ken Doll,” they cheer the transgendered.

The inconsistency isn’t compassionate. It’s cruel. And it shows how badly sexual ideology has mutilated our understanding of human well-being. The consistent and compassionate message both Alves and the transgendered need to hear is that their bodies aren’t the problem, and surgery isn’t the answer.
