The Point: Legislating Gendercide

Is Britain waging a war on girls? For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

A U.K. proposal to decriminalize abortion up to 24 weeks without the permission of doctors just passed the House of Commons. Yes, abortion laws across the pond are actually more restrictive than ours…for now.

Among this bill’s supporters is Wendy Savage, a member of the British Medical Association, who thinks women should have the right to terminate a pregnancy at any stage, for any reason—including the baby’s sex.

According to Savage, “forcing her [to go through with the pregnancy] is not going to be good for the eventual child, and it’s not going to be good for [the mother’s] mental health.”

Many are worried that parents, particularly immigrants, are aborting girls because of a cultural preference for boys. Savage calls this “gendercide” a myth, which is odd, because an analysis of U.K. census data from 2014 found that “thousands of girls” are missing from that country as a result of this very real practice.

Liberalizing Britain’s abortion laws will only condemn more girls—something you’d think liberals would oppose.
