The Point: Mums and Dads Wanted

Mums and Dads wanted. For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

Remember when advocates of no-fault divorce would chirp, “Kids don’t need married parents: they need happy parents.” Well, in the wake of same-sex marriage, the new phrase is, “kids don’t need a mom and a dad; they just need loving parents.”

But study after study after study demonstrates that’s simply not true. Kids fare better when biological dad is at home.

Nonetheless, a New York judge has granted custody of a 10-year-old boy to three individuals who were once a “throuple”—two men and one woman who no longer live together. And they all get custody of the child. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Research and all of creation tells us that kids need moms and dads. As Ryan Anderson says, “There’s no such thing as parenting. There’s only mummying and daddying.”

Are there heroic single moms, heroic stepdads, who love their children self-sacrificially and all of that? Yes. But deliberately re-engineering the family is morally and scientifically inexcusable. It’s a bad idea, and bad ideas have victims.
