The Point: Facebook’s Compromise

Social media is teaching us how to get along? For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

June is LGBT pride month, in case you missed it, and Facebook celebrated by giving millions of users a rainbow flag emoji.

Who got one? Well, it depends. Evidently Facebook algorithms looked at where a user lives, which pages they follow, and very likely their political leanings. Unsurprisingly, I wasn’t among those lucky recipients who got a rainbow flag emoji.

The sexual revolution is out of control, and celebrations of that brokenness and sin are sad. But you know what? At least Facebook is letting those who want to participate do so, and leaving the rest of us alone. This compromise lets everyone get along. That’s more than we can say for the LGBT rights movement as a whole, which has sued bakers, photographers, and florists for not joining the celebration.

Small accommodations. Simple concessions. Look, I’m irritated that everything has to revolve around sexuality, too. But moves like this one by Facebook go a long way to making peace, even where people disagree.
