The Point: The Narrow NIFLA Decision

Well, this one was closer than it should have been. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that pro-life pregnancy care centers in California don’t have to post notices advertising abortion services funded by the state. The Ninth Circuit had previously upheld the California law that required pregnancy care centers to promote abortion. But Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, definitively reversed the Ninth Circuit’s decision. It’s an important win for free speech, and another major success for the Alliance Defending Freedom, you know, that “hate group” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Still, it could have gone differently without Justice Neil Gorsuch on the bench. It shows how vital groups like ADF are to maintaining our freedom and confronting bad laws, and also, that elections have consequences. So Christians, stay involved—especially in important work like the pregnancy care center movement. And pray for our nation’s heart, soul, and culture. One Supreme Court win, especially one this close, is a reprieve, not a final victory.
