Recently, a TV host asked his audience to name the most dangerous idea in human history. One of his guests replied, “the belief that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and rose from the dead.” That guest was Peter Hitchens, brother of the late New Atheist writer Christopher Hitchens.
Peter Hitchens, however, is a devout Christian. These ideas of Jesus, he said,
alters the whole of human behavior and all our responsibilities. It turns the universe from meaningless chaos into a designed place in which there is justice and there is hope. And therefore, we all have a duty to discover the nature of that justice and work towards that hope. … It is incredibly dangerous, which is why so many people turn against it.
He’s right. Faith in Christ is personal, but not private. If Jesus is who He said He was, the world is a completely different place, and the implications for humanity are enormous.
