The Best of BreakPoint 2017

12/30/17

David Carlson

2017 was interesting, to say the least. The President vs. the media (or vice-versa), hurricanes, North Korea, the Supreme Court . . . But there were a lot of other things going on as well, maybe a few the headlines missed. What were the most viewed articles and commentaries at BreakPoint.org during 2017? Here they are.

 Top 5 BreakPoint Daily Commentaries

The Silent Suffering of Gay Men: John Stonestreet discusses a Huffington Post article in which the author, a self-described gay man, describes the loneliness, health issues and behavioral dysfunctions among those involved in the gay lifestyle.

Jesus, the Last Adam: John Stonestreet describes how the whole of Scripture leads us to Holy Week and the truth proclaimed by Peter in Acts: “Let all of the house of Israel therefore know assuredly that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified.”

Trump, the NFL, and UsJohn Stonestreet argued that sometimes our fascination with a news story is more important than the story itself. How is it that we are so wrapped up in the dispute between President Trump and the NFL?

The True Beauty of Women: In this moving pro-life commentary, Eric Metaxas tells us what one lingerie company is doing to show what makes a woman truly beautiful.

Eugene Peterson and Same-Sex “Marriage”: John Stonestreet says that Eugene Peterson’s seeming embrace of same-sex “marriage”—and his quick recantation—reveal a growing trend in evangelicalism: accepting personal experience over sound theology.

Top 5 Feature Articles at BreakPoint.org

Remembering Kara Tippetts, 2 Years After Her Death,” by Warren Cole Smith. At a time when assisted suicide and so-called “death with dignity” was gaining momentum in the culture, a brave young Christian woman with terminal cancer—Kara Tippetts—could dare to say, “In your choosing your own death, you are robbing those that love you with such tenderness the opportunity of meeting you in your last moments and extending you love in your last breaths.”

“The Firing of Bill O’Reilly” by Warren Cole Smith. Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly was one of the first of many big names to fall this past year. Warren Cole Smith looks at the lessons Christians and conservatives should draw about character, competence, and the best public witness of all–lives transformed by the Gospel.

“A Closer Look at Christmas: The Story behind the Manger, Shepherds, and Swaddling Clothes,” by Glenn Sunshine. Eminent Christian historian Glenn Sunshine gives us a new, fresh and historical look behind the very familiar elements of the Nativity.

“The Verse the Culture Misquotes Most Regularly to Quiet Christians,” by J. Warner Wallace: No doubt you’ve had Matthew 7:1 hurled back at you when you enter a conversation about traditional Christian morality. Jesus did indeed say, “Judge not lest you be judged.” But as J. Warner Wallace reminds us, context is critical.

“Top Christian Thinkers Reflect on ‘The Benedict Option’: A BreakPoint Symposium”: Rod Dreher’s “The Benedict Option” sparked a lot of controversy in the Christian world—and a lot of good discussion. BreakPoint invited Christian thinkers like Mollie Hemingway, Trevin Wax, Peter Leithart and many others to share their thoughts.

Top 5 “The Point” Commentaries with John Stonestreet

“CNN’s Fake History”: Fake news was a big story and an unsettling trend in 2017. So why should we be surprised that CNN would paint a false picture of the Church’s ancient opposition to abortion?

“The Church of Harry Potter”: If you need additional proof that humans are essentially religious beings, look no further than a book club at Yale that treated Harry Potter as scripture.

“Dunkirk: And If not”: When British forces were pushed to the sea in WWII, troops sent a message home: “And if not” . . . a clear reference to Daniel 3:18. The 1940 British public understood what the troops meant. Would they—or we—today?

The Boy Scouts Are Lost: It seems the Boy Scouts of America have forgotten a simple truth: Boys and girls are different.

Indoctrinating Kindergartners: The parents of kindergartners were horrified when a little boy switched into girls’ clothing to reveal his new identity as part of a “gender reveal” exercise. They should have been. But none of us should be surprised. The LGBT movement is coming for our kids.
