John’s gospel is the only one to tell us that Jesus said, “I thirst.”

On the cross, He who once cried, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink” was Himself thirsty. Why does this matter?

Because Jesus suffering is the ultimate answer to the problem of evil—the problem that has tripped up Western intellectuals for hundreds of years.

The cross proves that God, though all-knowing, all-powerful and all merciful is not aloof from human suffering: Like us, He thirsted! He suffered, and He defeated death and He has the scars to prove it.

We must have sight of thorn-pricks on Thy brow;
We must have Thee, O Jesus of the Scars. . .
