Every year, the Christian students at Oxford University put on an evening of carols, singing hymns like “Oh Holy Night” and “Joy to the World,” followed by a guest speaker who unpacks the hope of Advent. 

Last year, apologist Kristi Mair powerfully articulated the implications of the season: 

There is nothing more relevant than hearing the voice of someone who loves you saying “come home,” especially when that Someone is not a fringe figure in the drama of the cosmos but according to … the Christian faith is the very source of reality itself.  

Christmas is an opportunity to share the riches of Christ with a world starving for meaning, truth, and direction. At what other time of year are such truths about Christ shared so widely across culture, on radio, on television, in stores, and homes. 

And, like the Oxford students, we can have confidence that, as the Apostle John declared, “the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
