Podcast: The Art of Civil Disagreement, with Christopher Love

09/2/19

David Carlson

Civil disagreement—or civility in discourse—seems a lofty goal in our angry and polarized public square. But as Christopher Love argues, it is a necessary ingredient to a well-ordered society. In this presentation given at St. George’s Anglican Church in Colorado Springs, Love defines civil disagreement, presents a case for it from secular and a theological perspective, and provides strategies for engaging in civil discourse.

Love is an Active Duty officer who teaches philosophy at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He writes on civil disagreement and related topics at civil-america.blog. He is also a Colson Fellow from the Class of 2018-2019. The views expressed here are solely his own and do not represent those of the U.S. Air Force Academy or the Department of Defense.

During his presentation, Love mentions a handout he gave to the audience. We have that in .pdf form for you here.

Christopher Love is introduced by Sarah Stonestreet, wife of Colson Center President John Stonestreet, and the leader of the Colson Fellows cohort in Colorado Springs.
