The Point: Dark Side Babies

What’s worse than having Darth Vader for a dad? For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

It’s no secret that in America, movies influence baby names. After the original Star Wars in 1977, the name “Luke” soared in popularity, but not because of its biblical origins.

Now a new name from Star Wars is appearing on a lot of birth certificates. “Kylo,” the name of the black-masked bad guy of “The Force Awakens” jumped 2,300 spots on the Social Security Administration’s list of baby name rankings. Unlike Luke, who rescued the princess and blew up the Death Star in the seventies, Kylo bows to an evil dark lord, throws tantrums with a light saber, and murders his father.

In the Bible, names have significance, and even predict what a person will be like. The best example, of course, Jesus Himself, whose name means, “Jehovah saves.”

I wonder how these little Kylos are going to feel when they grow up, watch Star Wars, and then learn who they were named after. Poor kids. Maybe we should have just stuck with “Luke.”
