Idolatry isn’t always this obvious. For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

Pascal famously said that we have a “God-shaped hole” in our hearts that only God can fill. But in this culture of constant commercial messaging, it’s easy to get the impression that the hole in our hearts is actually “stuff-shaped” and can only be filled with the latest, greatest objects that we’re being sold.

We’re bombarded all the time—online, on TV, driving by an ad on the side of a bus—with the message that buying will make us happy.

Most of the time, it’s subtle. But then there’s Cadillac.

A new online ad features a bright red, shiny SUV driving in front of a beautiful 20-something who’s gazing longingly at it . . . and the background vocal sings, “On your knees, patiently, quietly, faithfully, worship me.”

I’m not making this up. I had to look up the lyrics to make sure I was hearing it right.

At least GM and Cadillac aren’t being subtle, but it’s a good reminder: Every day we must choose whom we will serve. Stuff? Or the Lord?
