What happens when the public square is flooded? For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

Nearly half of all Americans think that if churches get out of the charity biz, government can pick up the slack. But as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have shown yet again, that’s crazy talk. Nothing could be further from the truth.

USA Today just reported that the bulk of relief efforts in Florida are being led by faith-based groups. According to National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, about 80 percent of all recovery happens because of non-profits, with the majority of them being  faith based.

When you donate water or clothes to disaster relief, there’s a good chance that a Methodist, a Mennonite, or a Baptist will be distributing them. In every disaster, groups like Samaritan’s Purse are there. It’s why FEMA coordinates with these groups. We need them!

See, efforts to remove faith from the public square—especially the Christian faith—are madness. Especially when that day comes and we wake up to find that the public square and our homes and neighborhoods are under water.
