I’m losing my taste for ice cream. For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.
Same-sex “marriage” hasn’t yet come to the land down under but Ben and Jerry’s thinks that needs to change. So they’ve banned same-flavor ice cream scoops at all their Australian locations until the country adopts gay “marriage.”
First, if they want to encourage same-sex unions, shouldn’t they serve more of the same flavor, not less?
Second, this reminds me of a recent episode of Bill Nye’s new Netflix show that compares sexual preferences with ice cream flavors. In it, a bigoted vanilla cone tells all the other flavors they should be like him—until he gets a taste of mint chocolate chip and likes it.
As theologian Alastair Roberts points out, the idea that sexuality, like ice cream, is a matter of taste misses one obvious reality: babies. Different sexual preferences are not and cannot be equal because sex has a purpose and a design, and not all kinds of sex have the potential to fulfil that design. In light of that reality, the ice cream metaphor quickly melts.
