“How long, O Lord?” For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

In the aftermath of the unprecedented shooting in Las Vegas that’s left 58 dead and 500 injured at the time of this recording, there are many appropriate responses from Christians, but none more important than what the Apostle Paul teaches in Romans 12:15, to “weep with those who weep.” And there are a lot of people weeping right now.

Scripture is full of moments when God’s family mourned. Even Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of a friend, even though He knew that He would soon be turning that funeral into a party of resurrection.

The evil and death in this world can overwhelm. And so we cry out with the Psalmist, “How long, O Lord?” Together with all of creation, we groan for that day when God will “wipe away every tear,” and “death shall be no more.”

Meanwhile, Jesus alone points us to and guarantees that God has not left us. We take comfort, in knowing that God wept, too, and that He, Himself, faced death. So let’s follow His example—and trust that this will not last forever.
