The Point: Earlymoon

Here’s a “Princess Bride” reference for you! For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

“Mawwiage”… “You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.”

Okay, that’s two “Princess Bride” references, and both are appropriate for our culture.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” reports on the trend of engaged couples taking “earlymoons.” These romantic getaways happen before the wedding to help the bride and groom unwind, reconnect, and “remember why they’re getting married in the first place.”

But the problem in our culture isn’t that some couples forget why they’re getting married, but that our culture has forgotten what marriage is in the first place. Trips that take fornication for granted for unmarried couples just shows that we see marriage as a mere label to attach to any relationship we want.

But what if marriage isn’t just a label? What if it really exists, as much a part of the created order as is gravity or energy? Then we couldn’t flout it without consequences, any more than we could step off the roof and choose not to hit the ground.
