The Point
The Point: Go See “Emanuel”
In June 2015, 21-year old white supremacist Dylann Roof entered Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and committed one of the most shocking mass murders in American history.
How the victim’s families responded to this evil, and to Roof himself, has become as defining a part of this tragedy as the evil itself.
Nadine Collier, for example, told Roof: “I will never be able to hold [my mother] again… You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people, but God forgives you, and I forgive you.” And she was not alone. One family member after another offered their forgiveness.
This amazing story is one you and your family and friends—believers and non-believers alike—can see next week, June 17 or 19, in theaters across the country. “Emanuel” is a stunning and inspiring documentary directed by filmmaker Brian Ivie and produced by Steph Curry and Viola Davis.
