Loser just isn’t the right word. For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with the Point.
President Trump’s communication style is unorthodox and populist, of course, and has endeared him to millions. I don’t suspect we’ll see a change anytime soon. So I wasn’t surprised when he referred to the terrorists responsible for the horrific attack in Manchester at the Arianna Grande concert as “losers.”
But, I don’t think that’s the right word at all. It implies a sort of incompetence or failure to succeed in life. Perhaps the president meant they will eventually lose this war on terror, to which I heartily say AMEN.
But, what drives ISIS is something much more than the word “loser’ suggests. They’re living out of their deeply held beliefs about God, humanity, and history—beliefs that are not just mistaken or wrong but are, at root, evil in their rejection of God and truth.
Christians of all people who follow the word made flesh, should be among those who take words most seriously. The words we use to describe the evil in the world must be more carefully considered.
