The Point: This Is an Apple

Wait–Now they care about facts? For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

In a truly bizarre ad, CNN recently showed a video of an apple on a table. The narrator tells us, helpfully, “This is an apple. Some people might try to tell you it’s a banana. They might scream, ‘banana, banana, banana,’ over and over and over again. They might put ‘banana’ in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.”

The commercial closes with thiis caption, “facts matter.”

Now, I get it. People too readily believe what appears on their newsfeeds. And we now know Russia released even weirder ads to influence the 2016 election, so it’s important to remember: truth is real and independent of political opinion.

But CNN should practice what it preaches. Between its cancelled religion series, “Believer,” which badly distorted and misrepresented Christianity, or its support for the idea that men can become women and vice versa, this network is not as committed to the facts as its ads seem to suggest.
