Many people expected Colombia’s Constitutional Court would make Colombia the first large Latin American nation to legalize abortion, and that other countries would follow suit. After all, the justice in charge of the case had already argued that abortion should be legal up to sixteen weeks.

But that’s not what happened. Last week, the Court declined to hear a challenge to Colombia’s abortion law, which currently only permits abortion when the life of the mother is in jeopardy, in cases of life-threatening fetal deformity, and for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

The Court’s surprising decision was due at least in part to Colombian Catholics and Evangelicals marching and protesting changes to the law, as well as the 82 percent of Colombians opposed to changing it.

Apparently, the Court was watching.

The lesson for American Christians is that the spread of the culture of death isn’t inevitable, so stay engaged and speak up. Who knows what can happen?
